Brutus Vestalis has been the ruler of Rome for quite some time, his rule has been peaceful and he is very loved by the country, but Brutus is hiding something. The ruler is dying and only his royal family and closest guard know although many in the country have their suspicions.

Brutus' brother and his family are visiting the dying king and trying to help maintain the family's rule, but with no heir to the name, and none chosen the situation could turn very violent very quickly. The king knows he needs to choose an heir soon, but who? There are so many to choose from, all the men in Rome are possible candidates and each have their own strengths and weaknesses.

A young man named Hadrian has peaked the King's interest, but the king's family does not like him, and with good reason. Hadrian seems charming and able to rule, but the young man is ruthless and would do anything and harm anyone to secure his position. The sickness and the need to choose another ruler has been kept a secret for now, but secrets rarely stay hidden long.
